This Friday night at 7 PM, the Wheeling Cardinals (ranked 2nd in the conference) will host the Queens University of Charlotte Royals (ranked 5th) for a pivotal inter-conference rugby matchup at Wheeling University Stadium.
Wheeling enters the match ranked 2nd in the conference, while Queens sits at 5th, but the national Division I rankings tell a tighter story, the Cardinals are currently 4th in the country, with the Royals close behind at 5th. Both teams are national contenders, and Friday’s clash could shape the playoff landscape.
The rivalry between these two sides has only intensified over the past year. In fall 2024, Queens ended Wheeling’s playoff run in a hard-fought semifinal before going on to finish as national runners-up. But the Cardinals responded in the spring, defeating Queens at the Collegiate Rugby Championship to earn a spot in the title match, and ultimately claiming their second consecutive national title in 7s.
“This is a matchup we’ve been looking forward to since last year’s semifinal,” said Wheeling Head Coach Max Hamilton. “We’ve been testing ourselves with new concepts and pushing the boys every rep along the way. We’re keen to show how far we’ve come and what we’re willing to sacrifice to get there.”
Hamilton emphasized the importance of execution in key areas: “This weekend, it’s up to the forwards, set piece needs to be crisp, especially against a Queens maul. During open play, our goal is to control the pace, keep the ball in hand, and defend. The tries will come; we have an electric backline who is ready.”
Despite a 1–2 start to their season, Queens Head Coach Tyree Reed remains confident in his team’s progress. “We’ve shown growth each week and continue to build as a team,” said Reed. “Our record doesn’t fully reflect the strides we’re making, and I’m excited to see how we respond to the challenge against Wheeling on their home pitch. It’s another great opportunity for us to test ourselves and keep moving forward.”
With national rankings, recent playoff history, and pride all in play, Friday night’s clash promises to be one of the most compelling contests of the season — a battle between two elite programs with unfinished business.
